Custer, South Dakota, is nestled in the central Black Hills with beauty and fun in every direction.  Custer County covers an area 125 miles long and 70 miles wide with 1,300 miles of blue-ribbon streams and more than 350 miles of trails.  Much of Custer County is located in either the Black Hills National Forest, which includes 1.2 million acres of public land, or Custer State Park, one of the largest parks in the United Sates, which encompasses over 71,000 acres of granite peaks, pine forests, rolling prairies, scenic lakes, free-ranging bison herds, and the fourth-largest cave in the world, Wind Cave National Park. The eastern part of the county is known for the prized Fairburn Agates, South Dakota’s state gem. Four miles north of Custer is the world’s largest mountain carving in progress, Crazy Horse Memorial.  Further northeast from Crazy Horse is another recognizable mountain carving, Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The Black Hills are known for its rich history, boasting many area museums as well as many family-friendly activities.

LIBRARY DIRECTOR

CUSTER COUNTY LIBRARY

CUSTER, SOUTH DAKOTA

 

Custer County Commissioners and the Custer County Library Board of Trustees, Custer, South Dakota, are seeking a Library Director who is experienced in providing library services, innovative in developing electronic sources of information, familiar with budgeting, record-keeping, administration and supervision, and skilled in working with people of all ages and backgrounds in a rural/small town setting. The successful applicant will supervise a staff of 2.5 FTE, maintain a 3,710 sq. ft. main library and 1,260 sq. ft. branch library, serve 4,896 patrons with an annual circulation of 42,989 using a web-based automated Destiny system (see at www.custercounty sd.com), manage an annual budget of $145,482.00 and coordinate the activities of the Custer County Library Board of Trustees, the Custer County Library Foundation and community library volunteers.

 

Qualifications:

1.      Graduation from a college or university with a bachelors degree in library science, liberal arts, public administration or closely related field;

2.      Three years progressively responsible experience in library operations; or,

3.      Any equivalent combination of education or experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Salary: $35,000 to $38,000, depending on education and experience

Benefits: 10 hours a month of annual leave, 8 hours a month sick leave, 11.5 holidays a year, participation in the SD state retirement system, deferred compensation, health and life insurance plans, worker’s compensation.
