BUFFALO SOLDIERS IN DAKOTA TERRITORY
This 53 minute PowerPoint program provides a general introduction to the formation of four regiments of African American soldiers and the naming of them as Buffalo Soldiers. The 25th Infantry was assigned to duty in Dakota Territory from 1880 to 1888 at Forts Randall, Sisseton, Hale and Meade. Stories of individual soldiers who remained in South Dakota after they mustered out are included, for example, Alfred Taylor, pictured here, who died in 1939 and was buried at the Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City, SD. The cemetery locations of 25 Civil War and Buffalo Soldiers buried in western South Dakota are listed. The stories of Buffalo Soldiers from South Dakota who served in later wars are also included.
